The Hollow

The Hollow is a small collection of glacial erratics located in a nice forest setting south-west of Calabogie Lake. The ambiance is only slightly marred by the road and hydro cut running right through the area. Thankfully, the proximity of the road means the furthest boulder is no more than a 5 minute walk from your car.

There are around 10 boulders with established climbs on them, as well a short band of exposed rock which has yet to be developed. The area currently has around 50 established problems, with potential for more.

Guide

There is currently no public documentation for the bouldering here, but most of the boulders are pretty easy to find. We have put together a google map with pins marking the main boulders of interest. Explore and have fun!

Google Map with Boulder Locations

Location

The Hollow is located on the south side of the Madawaska River, about a 40 minute drive from Calabogie. A forest service road runs right through the boulder field, with a few parking pullouts that can accommodate a handful of vehicles. If they are full, be sure to park well onto the side of the road as this road does see traffic from other user groups.

Main Parking Pullout on Google Maps

Note that Google Maps mostly knows how to get to this pin, though it doesn’t have accurate information about the forest service roads. There are a few places where it may tell you to drive through the hydro cut instead of taking the obvious, well maintained gravel road. In those cases, continue following the actual road and it will get back on track eventually.

Approach

The Miracle boulder overlooks the parking pullout and is a mere 30 feet away. Once you make the arduous hike to this boulder, you can see the top of the Boss boulder further south along the hydro cut. On this side of the road are also the Hidden Gem boulders, back towards the way you drove in, and the undeveloped exposed rock band past the Boss and Boss Baby boulders.

Approximately 100 meters further down the road is another pullout on the opposite side. The rest of the boulders are strewn along the hillside above this pullout.
