The Expanse

If you are looking to avoid the crowds, this is the place – few boulderers seem keen on hauling their crash pads 45 minutes uphill. If you are willing to make the trek, though, you will be rewarded with a pretty awesome boulder and some fun bands of exposed rock to climb on.

The area boasts around 50 established problems and a handful of projects, with potential for more if you are will to do some cleaning.

Location

The Expanse is located on the south side of Dillons Mountain, which is the next ‘mountain’ south of the ski hill. It is accessed from the Barrett Chute Trailhead parking lot, the same parking used to access the Lake Cliff and Skywalk climbing areas.

Approach

The approach is not for the faint of heart. It is roughly 3km and goes pretty steadily uphill most of the way. The quickest we’ve ever done it is 45 minutes, and that is knowing exactly where to go. The approach links different sections of the trail system, as well as a couple of well travelled and not so well travelled shortcut trails. It is very strongly advised to use the All Trails track linked below for reference.
